Despite its general critical acclaim, Hell House LLC still seems to divide horror fans, especially found footage buffs. Since the rebirth of found footage in the 2000s, the horror genre has been so saturated with this style. It’s hard to break the mold and stand out, but Hell House LLC does just that.

Our story begins in media res, on the night of the Hell House tragedy, and spirals across a few timelines to unravel the true story of the haunt. If you’ve seen my review on Hellfest, you know I have a soft spot for the villain in a haunted house attraction trope that has come to life in the last few years. I find it to be an incredibly plausible danger, which adds to the scare factor.

What Hell House LLC does so well, is keep us guessing in the best possible way. Sara and the rest of the Hell House crew are entirely unreliable narrators. Everyone seems to be hiding something, despite the fact this is supposed to be a group of friends. They don’t trust each other, they don’t trust the haunt, and the audience doesn’t trust them. This creates an excellent build of suspense. Acting can sometimes be a weak point for American found footage, but I found that this cast held their own.

Though the twist ending is a nice touch, it does leave us wanting more. It leaves many things unanswered in a way that feels sloppy. The casting also harshly lacks diversity, which continues to be a disappointment in the subgenre. Overall, this is a fun watch but if you aren’t a fan of found footage, this probably won’t sell you on much.
