Dir. Samuel Bodin | Now Streaming On: Netflix | Rating: 4/5

I watched this series a year ago at this point and haven’t stopped thinking about it. Marianne is an eight episode French supernatural horror series currently streaming on Netflix. The story is very reminiscent of IT. We follow a group of friends across two timelines as they are stalked by a demonic entity known as “Marianne.”
The shoreline town of Elden is mesmerizing and dreamlike to look at, you feel the pull of it drawing Emma back as the story unfolds. As a born and bred New Englander, there is something about a rustic and shadowy shore town that really resonates with me. This series is definitely one where the setting is almost as much of a character as the cast.
The story arc of Marriane is a poignant commentary on trauma, friendship, and religion. This paints the picture of the Church as the villain, as they continue to turn a blind eye to the horrors in town, across both timelines. It’s a bold and relevant take that I’m always a sucker for.
Stunning to look at with a very talented cast, even if it is a bit long winded toward in the last act. Be prepared for atmospheric scares that leave you uneasy and unsettled, with a few jump scares throughout.
Know Before You Watch: Features nudity, suicide, alcohol and drug use, death, blood, religious commentary.
