Dir. Mimi Cave | Now Streaming On: Hulu | Rating: 5/5

I had seen some of the hype for Fresh but went in with virtually no other information and it set me up to be quite impressed by this project. As a fast paced and stylish dark comedy, I might go as far as to call this a very approachable horror film? Despite its gruesome subject matter, the gore is minimal and stylized to the point a casual viewer may be able to stomach it.
If you lean into this being a dark comedy, you will enjoy it much more. Steve as a character is like a wacky Patrick Bateman, all the psychotic tendencies with a flare of socially awkward charm. I found myself laughing at the sheer absurdity of half of his lines. Noa is screaming “This isn’t happening!” and he is standing there nonchalantly replying “Yes, it is.”
Stylistically, Fresh is simple yet stunning to look at. The red theming and motif is done so well as we hit the first 30 minutes. If this was a simple date-gone-wrong situation, this really could pass as a thriller, but Fresh takes this a horrifying step past that.
Being the overprotective best friend is basically half of my personality, so Mollie was a relatable and charming addition to the storyline. I loved seeing her character written with such a lovable wit and personality to her.
Since this is a comedy at its core, there wasn’t any groundbreaking messages to Fresh, but honestly I was okay with that. Overall, I really did enjoy it and if you’re looking for something to watch with a friend who is a horror newbie – this might be the one to stream!
