Dir. Darren Aronofsky | Now Streaming On: Hulu | Rating: 5/5

Another stunning film that has risen to cult status in the last decade, Black Swan is a stylish and intense psychological horror. This film checks so many boxes of commentary while upholding its storytelling prowess. As to be expected of a ballet centered movie, it comments on the crushing weight of perfection and womanhood. From an acting standpoint, Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis are truly a dynamic duo as the lead roles, representing the duality of talent, privilege, and intent. Through the characters of Thomas and Beth, we see a relentless take on female talent as a commodity and ageism.
Black Swan should also be applauded in its approachability to a wide range of audiences. The lead actresses, the entities of Swan Lake, and the expectations of a prima ballerina are not specific to the horror genre. The premise of the film is something that someone who is very unfamiliar with horror could still be very interested in, and also not be disappointed with. With that being said, this movie retains its share of scares, including a psychological twist and a dark touch of gore.
This is a beautiful film and a standout piece of female-centered horror storytelling. It serves as the high point of Darren Aronofsky’s repertoire, unless you’re in the camp that prefers Mother! (2017).
