Woo-hoo! We made it to the end of our Cagematch reviews. We’re bringing it home with a so-so campy horror comedy – Slice (2018). Of the horror comedies on the A24 resume, this is far from the worst and it wasn’t even unenjoyable, just lackluster. This is a Scooby Doo-esque whodunnit murder mystery in a small town inhabited by humans, ghosts, witches, vampires, and other creatures of the night. We follow a group of ragtag and problematic pizza delivery drivers as they begin to be picked off one by one.
The premise of this was fun but nothing really delivers, especially the pizza. Cymbal crash – god I’m so tired of writing these. The cinematography is mismatched, with some parts of these being decently shot then coupled with cheesy CGI that ruins the mood. It’s obvious that Slice isn’t meant to be taken seriously, and it doesn’t take itself seriously either. The laughs are primarily slapstick and low hanging, which makes sense since this has been described as a stoner comedy.
Another short review, since this film is under 90 minutes and isn’t rocket science. There is no deep commentary to unpack. This might be a feel good film to add to your Halloween rotation, but you’re not missing anything by skipping it.
