Honestly, if you locked me in a mansion with my high school friend group and enough cocaine to kill an elephant I bet we would encounter a similar outcome as Bodies Bodies Bodies.
I put off seeing this due to my distaste for both horror comedy and A24. The trailer felt on the nose and unfunny, but boy was I wrong. Bodies is self aware and self deprecating humor for what I affectionately label as my generation – the young millennial and gen-z cusp-ers.
You know I love making fun of the wealthy, and Bodies revels in the foolishness of these wealthy 20 somethings. Every bad thing that happens in this film can be chalked up to this group’s privilege and disconnection from the “real world.”
Bodies is a stylish, tongue in cheek spin on the slasher that toys with gen-z’s infatuation with cancel culture. Though holding people in power and people causing harm accountable always has its place, the reality is that we as a society have created a media frenzy that jumps to conclusions without thinking. We watch this unfold through the night with Sophie’s friends, and we are taken for quite the ride.
This won’t be to everyone’s taste, but I found the play on politically correct buzzwords to be hilarious. And this is coming from me, the blogger being called a bleeding heart liberal man hater in my DMs daily. Being the butt of the joke can be fun when it’s done right, and comes from a place of self awareness.
Where Bodies stumbles is in its cinematography and pacing. The crux of this story involves a power outage, so much of this film is lit by cell phone flashlights. This had my eyes aching by the end of the film. But when the light returns after the storm, we’re hit with by reality as the darkness lifts and the truth is revealed. Some exposition could’ve benefitted from brevity as this does have a bit of a start-stop feel at times.
Overall, a fun watch, with few complaints from me, your favorite toxic Gemini moon.
